The Osaka Mainichi, Tuesday 31th October 1922 (Page 2)

From the Editor's Desk

The famous wrestler, Onishiyama, gave a lecture on The Way of Wrestling, before a great audience in Osaka, last Saturday. He said that Japanese wrestling is a materialization of Bushido, and that victory can only be won in the right sort of spirit. Among all kinds of sport, wrestling is one that most requires the spirit of fair play. Besides, it is a game where, in comparison with the real ability of the contestants, very little of chance enters. Wrestler Onishiyama is a middle school graduate, and one of the most promising champions of Japanese wrestlers.

LARGE CROWD SEES STUDENTS WRESTLE

Exciting Matches at Ohama Show Wonderful Ability Among Amateur Participants

The first day of the forth annual student's national wrestling matches being held for three days, October 29, 30 and 31, at Ohama, Sakai, under the auspices of the Osaka Mainichi, drew 100,000 spectators. The extensive stands around the ring were literally filled with these masses of people; many of them came as early three o'clock in the morning, so that they might secure good seats. The features of the day were the presence of hundreds of women, who seemed to enjoy the matches as much as the men.
Thirty nine middle schools and 16 colleges throughout the country are represented in the present contests, there being 200 delegates.
Today is the last day, and the school having the strongest team of wrestlers will receive the victory flag from the Osaka Mainichi. In view of the day being the national holiday, a tremendous crowd is expected and the tramway company is already making preparations effciently handle the traffic.

Second Day Exciting
The matches yesterday, the second day, were generally more exciting, and, in spite of the day being a general working day, there was a tremendous crowd of spectators. On this day, the Kansai University, revived remarkably and revealed its real power by its repeated complete victory in the second and third round of matches. The Osaka Dental College was almost equally brilliant, though it lost two points in the third round of matches.
On the first day, the matches were commenced at 8 o'clock. The matches among the middle school students came first. The most exciting of these were: that between the Ritsumei Middle School, Kyoto, and the Kainan Middle School, Kochi, that between the Toyokuni Middle School, Fukuoka, and the Aki Middle School, Kochi, and that between Odaru Middle School, Odaru, and the Aichi Middle School, Nagoya. Later the matches among the college students were given, the most exciting one being that between the Waseda University, Tokyo, and the Nippon Medical College, Tokyo.
