Akutsugawa Suffers First Defeat

Due to great interest taken by the sumo fans in the contest between Akutsugawa, who won successive victories in the first 5 days against all the leading champions of the west side, who were put up against him, and Onishiki, the only remaining super-champion on that side undefeated, there was an extraordinary crowd of spectators at the Kokugikan Sumo Hall, on May 17. When the time came for the two wrestlers to appear on the dohyo intense interest was manifested in the faces of the spectators.
As soon as the two wrestlers rose to struggle, Akutsugawa took the initiative, and pushed his foe with both hands, with furious force toward the edge of the ring. There Onishiki adroitly turned his body to the left, and in an instant touched the back of Akutsu with both hands, causing Akutsu, of his own momentum, to fall flat on the dohyo. Onishiki's skill profusely praised, as was also the indomitable spirit manifested by Akutsugawa.
