Grand Wrestling Matches In Tokyo Open With Events

Super-Champion Tochigi Bites Dust On First Day; Record-Event That Thrills Spectators

Tochigiyama, super-champion of sumo -Japanese Wrestling,- of the Western side, was defeated by Akutsugawa, tenth in the rank, at the opening session of the summer season on May 12, at the Kokugikan, Tokyo. The event was a feature which gave a thrill to the spectators, who had never ever dreamed that so invincible a super-champion as Tochigiyama could be defeated.
As the two wrestlers rose to close in for wrestling, Akutsugawa vigorously pushed Tochigiyama, who was barely able to hold the two arms of his adversary, and he was concentrating the energy in trying to take a firmer hold on the arms of Akutsugawa. Meanwhile, Akutsugawa found an opportunity to extend his arms on both sides of Tochigiyama and to push him. Akutsugawa then pushed his adversary's chest with two hands, thus causing Tochigiyama to retreat outside the regulation circle of the dohyo - earthen platform - to his ignominious defeat.
The sumo season continues for 10 days.
